Ashtadhyayi of Panini, comprising 8 chapters, is the preliminary and foundational text for learning Vyakarana Shastra. This text contains approximately 4000 sutra-s that encompasses all grammatical concepts. It serves as the basis for advanced study. Mastering the technique of understanding a sutra, using the inbuilt structures of the Ashtadhyayi, is essential to delve deep into Vyakarana. In this course, Vid. Vaishnava Simha teaches the second chapter. He will teach how to derive the meaning and application of the sutra-s, focusing on vibhakti usage, samasa formation, and related grammatical rules, without relying on any commentary.

What are the prerequisites to get the best out of this course? 

Learners who have passed the course-end assessment of the following courses with 60% or more marks are directly eligible for admission into the course. They still need to fill the application form for completeness. They need NOT write the entrance test.

Eligibility for the Entrance Test

  • Students currently pursuing Pre-University or undergraduate studies in Vyakarana Shastra.
  • Students who have basic knowledge of derivation of Subanta-s (Noun forms) and Tinanta-s (Verb forms) of shuddha, nijanta and sanadyanta dhatu-s.
  • Students who have learnt Foundational concepts of Paninian grammar through texts like Laghukaumudi, Siddhanta Kaumudi, or Kashika Vritti

    Entrance Test Details 

  • Date and time - 24th October 10:00 AM IST - 27th October 6:00 PM IST. Entrance test can be attempted anytime in this duration.
  • Type - MCQ, 50 questions 
  • Cut-Off marks - 60 percent 
  • Syllabus - Basics of Sanskrit language and grammar - knowledge of noun forms and verb forms, sentence construction, vibhaktis and lakara-s, basics of sandhi-s, samasa-s, prayoga-s and sutra-s for samjna, paribhasha, sandhi-s, basics of subanta and tinanta prakriya.

What is the effort required to complete this course?

This is a 5-credit course, with a total expected student effort of 150-160 hours.

The Ashtadhyayi is a seminal work in the realm of Sanskrit grammar, authored by Maharshi Panini. Comprises of eight meticulously structured adhyaya-s. Written in the concise and precise sutra (aphorism) format, the Ashtadhyayi is renowned for its logical and analytical approach to understanding the Sanskrit language.

The second adhyaya focuses on the rules for case usage and compound formation.

This course offers to explore this pivotal second adhyaya by discussing the meaning and morphology of the sutra-s in a unique way without using any commentary, such that just by knowing the sutra, its meaning and application can be understood and applied in actual usage.

The second chapter of Ashtadhyayi will be covered in this course

2.1 - Samasa prakarana (Samarthadhikara, Avyayibhava, Tatpurusha, Karmadharaya Samasa-s)

2.2 - Samasa prakarana (Ekadeshi, Nan, Shashthi, Ku, Gati, Pradi, Upapada, Bahuvreehi, Dvandva Samasa-s, Poorvanipata in Samasa)

2.3 - Vibhakti prakarana (Anabhihite, Vibhakti Vidhana - Kaaraka, Upapada, Karmapravachaniya vibhaktis for Dvitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi, Panchami & Saptami; Prathama, Shashthi)

2.4 - Linga & vachana in Samasa, Anvadeshas, Ardhadhatuka adhikara, luk prakarana

There will be an MCQ-assessment at the end of each paada, for 50 marks. Additionally, there will be a course end assessment for the entire chapter, for 100 marks.

Paada-wise Assessment - 50x4 = 200 Marks
Full-chapter Assessment                  100 Marks
Total 300 Marks

Certificates will be issued to those who clear the assessment with a cumulative score of 60% or more (180 / 300).
