Dhatu-s are the root forms of verbs in Sanskrit. It is said that all words in Sanskrit are ultimately derived from these dhatu-s. Around 2000 dhatu-s are systematically arranged by Maharshi Panini in the text known as the Paniniya Dhatupatha or simply the Dhatupatha. This text is a foundational work in the study of Vyakarana Shastra, as it not only lists the dhatu-s but also provides their meanings, classifications and attributes. Studying this Dhatupatha is essential for derivation of all the verb forms. In this compact and insightful five-day course, Vid. Vaishnava Simha will give an overview on how to interpret the Paniniya Dhatupatha, understand the various attributes of each dhatu and explore the practical uses of those attributes.
