Know More about the Course

Srimad Bhagavatam is one of the 18 Mahapurana-s, and is considered by many to be the greatest Purana. Srimad Bhagavatam was composed by Veda Vyasa as per the advice of Narada. It is said that Vyasa maharshi initially organised the Veda-s into 4 branches and taught them to his disciples, which were then passed on through generations. After that, out of compassion for those to whom the Veda-s were not accessible, he composed the Mahabharata, which distills the entire Vedartha in simple terms. Yet, he was not completely satisfied. He attained contentment only after composing the Bhagavata, which represents the highest form of devotion to the Supreme being. Srimad Bhagavatam consists of 12 Skandha-s, and 332 adhyaya-s. Dashama skandha, describing the avatara and leela-s of Sri Krishna is the most popular portion.

This course deals with the Dashama skandha.

Dashama Skandha is known as the Heart of the Bhagavata. In the Second Half (Uttaraardha) of Skandha 10, the focus shifts to Bhagavan Sri Krishna’s life in Mathura and Dwaraka after the slaying of Kamsa. It describes how Krishna establishes Dwaraka as a secure abode for the Yadava-s, his marriages, including the sacred union with Rukmini, and his many victories over powerful enemies such as Jarasandha, Kalayavana, Shalva, and Narakasura. The narrative highlights his glorious leela-s such as the Syamantaka jewel episode, the lifting of the Parijata tree, and his interactions with the Pandava-s. Episodes like Sudama Charitra reveal his deep compassion and love for devotees, while the liberation of Shishupala demonstrates his supreme grace even towards opponents.
