What are the pre-requisites to get the best out of this course? (Eligibility)

Ability to understand Kannada.
A background in Vedanta, Vyakarana, and other shastras would be helpful in appreciating the subtle points mentioned during the classes.
Good knowledge of Sanskrit language and grammar, at the level of Chittoor - Samartha / Samskrita Bharati – Kovida is preferable
Knowledge of the first, second, third, and fourth Skandha of Srimad Bhagavata is recommended.

About the Text and Author

Srimad Bhagavata is one of the 18 Mahapurana-s, and is considered by many to be the greatest Purana. Srimad Bhagavata was composed by Veda Vyasa as per the advice of Narada – It is said that Vyasa maharshi initially organised the veda-s into 4 branches and taught them to his disciples, which were then passed on through generations. After that, out of compassion for those to whom the vedas were not accessible, he composed the Mahabharata, which distills the entire vedartha in simple terms. Yet, he was not completely satisfied. He attained contentment only after composing the Bhagavata, which presents the highest form of devotion to the Supreme being. Srimad Bhagavatam consists of 12 Skandhas, and 332 adhyayas. Dashama skandha, describing the avatara and leelaas of Sri Krishna is the most popular portion. This course deals with the adhyayas shloka-by-shloka. Each class tries to cover one complete adhyaya, other than cases where an adhyaya is very long.

What is the Syllabus?

This course covers Skandha 5 of Srimad Bhagavata, which contains 26 chapters. The Fifth Skandha of Bhagavatam contains the charitas of two important personages - Rishabhadeva and Jadabharata. The conversation between King Rahoogana and Bharata is filled with deep principles of Vedanta. After this, the skandha contains a detailed description of the universe, termed "Bhuvanakosha", which contains details about the 7 dveepas, the postition of planetary objects, the netherworlds, and Naraka.
