Srimad Bhagavata is one of the 18 Mahapurana-s, and is considered by many to be the greatest Purana. Srimad Bhagavata was composed by Veda Vyasa as per the advice of Narada – It is said that Vyasa maharshi initially organised the veda-s into 4 branches and taught them to his disciples, which were then passed on through generations. After that, out of compassion for those to whom the vedas were not accessible, he composed the Mahabharata, which distills the entire vedartha in simple terms. Yet, he was not completely satisfied. He attained contentment only after composing the Bhagavata, which presents the highest form of devotion to the Supreme being. Srimad Bhagavatam consists of 12 Skandhas, and 332 adhyayas. Dashama skandha, describing the avatara and leelaas of Sri Krishna is the most popular portion. This course deals with the adhyayas shloka-by-shloka. Each class tries to cover one complete adhyaya, other than cases where an adhyaya is very long.
The eighth skandha of the Srimad Bhagavatam unfolds diverse cosmic events. Commencing with the portrayal of Manus as cosmic administrators, it delves into the crisis and liberation of Gajendra. Seeking protection, the devas and asuras agree to a temporary truce. A pivotal moment unfolds as Lord Siva heroically drinks poison during the churning of the Milk Ocean. The detailed narrative encompasses the Mohini incarnation of Bhagavan and an otherworldly celestial battle. Themes explored include universal management, the destinies of future Manus, the conquest of Bali Chakravarty, the Payo-vrata process, the Vamana avatar, Bali's surrender, arrest, and ultimate liberation. The eighth skandha culminates with the Matsya avatar.
