Under the guidance of Dr. Venkatasubramanian P and Smt. - Knowing Sanskrit is not compulsory for learning the Amarakosha. However, some knowledge of the language and vocabulary would help understand the words and their application in the language.
- Prior knowledge of Kanda 1 and earlier portions of Kanda 2 of the Amarakosha, taught by Dr. Venkatasubramanian P, is beneficial - learners who have completed previous Amarakosha courses may find it easier to understand the structure and interpretation of the text.

“अष्टाध्यायी जगन्माता अमरकोशो जगत्पिता” (Ashtadhyayi is the mother of the world, and Amarakosha is the father) is a popular saying. Ashtadhyayi and Amarakosha are extremely useful tools for those who wish to gain a mastery of Sanskrit language and the Shastra-s. In olden times, it was a common practice to teach children to memorise these two texts at a very young age, even before formal learning began. Equipped with these fixed in memory, as they studied the language and Shastra-s, the children learnt to apply the Sutra-s easily, and had a phenomenal vocabulary.
Amarakosha is written by Amarasimha. Amarakosha is also called as Namalinganushasanam. It contains 3 Kanda-s with 26 Varga-s and over 3000 lines. Amarakosha collects words with similar meanings, along with providing information about their Linga, which is very important for using them in the language. Knowing the Amarakosha is a huge advantage in the study of literature and in enhancing Sanskrit vocabulary.
This course teaches you the Brahma-varga (ब्रह्मवर्गः) from the second Kanda, which deals with words related to sacred rituals, Yajna, Homa, deities, sacrificial elements, and spiritual concepts.
