Amarakosha of Amarasimha is one of the most popular lexicons of Sanskrit. This course will train the students to read and recite the verses of the first three varga-s (Bhumi, Pura, Shaila) of the second kanda of Amarakosha fluently. The object denoted by the word mentioned in the lines of the three varga-s, along with its synonyms and some special grammatical points related to the lines will also be covered concisely in the course.

“अष्टाध्यायी जगन्माता अमरकोशो जगत्पिता” (Ashtadhyayi is the mother of the world, and Amarakosha is the father) is a popular saying. Ashtadhyayi and Amarakosha are extremely useful tools for those who wish to gain a mastery of Sanskrit language and the shastras. In olden times, it was a common practice to teach children to memorise these two texts at a very young age, even before formal learning began. Equipped with these fixed in memory, as they studied the language and shastras, the children learnt to apply the sutras easily, and had a phenomenal vocabulary.
Amarakosha is written by Amarasimha. Amarakosha is also called as Namalinganushasanam. It contains 3 kandas with 26 vargas and over 3000 lines. Amarakosha collects words with similar meanings, along with providing information about their linga, which is very important for using them in the language. Knowing the Amarakosha is a huge advantage in the study of literature and in enhancing Sanskrit vocabulary.
In this course, the first three vargas of the second kanda of Amarakosha are taught. The three vargas are - Bhumivarga, Puravarga and Shailavarga.
Yes. There will be a set of periodic quizzes in the course and an oral test will be conducted at the end of the course. Upon successful completion of the quizzes and the oral test, a certificate will be issued to all participants who score above 60%.
