Deepening Sanskrit Proficiency through the Bhagavad Gita: A Grammatical Study of the Chapters 1-3
The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most studied and revered texts of the Sanskrit tradition. While many courses focus on its philosophical teachings and spiritual message, this course, guided by Dr. Leena Doshi, approaches the text from a different perspective as a gateway to mastering Sanskrit grammar through direct engagement with the original shloka-s. This course presents a detailed grammatical analysis of the first three Adhyaya-s (Chapters 1–3) of the Bhagavad Gita. Using Samsaadhanii and other supporting tools, learners will study the structure of each shloka through padaccheda, anvaya, roopa-parichaya, sandhi, samasa, verb forms, and prakriti–pratyaya analysis.

What are the pre-requisites to get the best out of this course? (Eligibility)
- A good knowledge of the Sanskrit language and grammar, such as Level 3 of Chittoor, Level 4 of any other series, or its equivalent, is required.
- Ability to understand Hindi.

- This is a 4-Credit Course, with total expected Student effort of 120-130 hrs.

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most revered and widely studied scriptures. Consisting of 700 shloka-s arranged in 18 Adhyaya-s, it forms a part of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, traditionally attributed to Bhagavan Vedavyasa.
The Gita is presented as a dialogue between Arjuna and Shri Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, just before the commencement of the great war between the Pandava-s and the Kaurava-s. Faced with grief, confusion, and moral dilemma at the prospect of fighting his own relatives, teachers, and friends, Arjuna seeks guidance from Krishna. The teachings imparted by Krishna in response to Arjuna’s questions constitute the Bhagavad Gita.
This course focuses on the first three Adhyaya-s of the Bhagavad Gita:
- Arjuna Vishada Yoga (Chapter 1) – Arjuna’s despondency and moral conflict.
- Sankhya Yoga (Chapter 2) – The foundational teachings of the Gita, including the nature of the Self, duty, and equanimity.
- Karma Yoga (Chapter 3) – The doctrine of selfless action and the importance of performing one’s duty without attachment to results.
While these chapters are traditionally studied for their philosophical and spiritual teachings, this course approaches them from a grammatical perspective. Through detailed analysis of the original Sanskrit text, students will learn to understand the structure of the shloka-s using padaccheda, anvaya, roopa-parichaya, sandhi, samasa, verb forms, and prakriti–pratyaya analysis, thereby developing the ability to engage directly with the Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit.
