The Vishnu-Purana is a revered Hindu scripture, recognized as one of the eighteen Mahapurana-s. It consists of approximately 7,000 verses and is traditionally structured into six sections, called Amsha-s, each encompassing multiple chapters.
The text primarily focuses on Bhagavan Vishnu, detailing his various avatars, cosmology, and teachings. It also encompasses discussions on creation, preservation, and destruction, aligning with the cyclical nature of the universe in Hindu philosophy. Additionally, the Vishnu-Purana addresses aspects of dharma (duty/righteousness), the four stages of life (ashrama-s), and the genealogies of gods, sages, and kings.
The Vishnu-Purana, was imparted by the sage Parashara to his disciple Maitreya. The Vishnu-Purana is revered for its comprehensive portrayal of Bhagavan Vishnu's attributes and his role in the cosmic order, making it a foundational text in Vaishnavism, the tradition dedicated to the worship of Vishnu.
In the first Amsha of Vishnu-Purana , there are 22 Adhyaya-s and in this first Amsha there are around 1400 verses. (Geeta press Edition)
It opens with sage Parāśara praising Nārāyaṇa as the single, all‑pervading reality and promising to outline creation, sustenance and dissolution. It lays out the Purāṇic picture of the universe (space, time and geography), and finishes with royal line‑lists that carry history from Manu. Then it explains, step by step, how the world is created—starting from very subtle elements like mind and energy, and then moving on to things we can see, like the earth, oceans, planets, stars, and living beings. It talks about how time flows like kalpa, manvantara, yuga cycles, how many worlds there are, what the universe looks like, and who ruled the earth through ancient dynasties.
The First Amsha gives the basic ideas, map of the universe, timeline, and list of ancient kings, which prepare the ground for the later parts of the book that will tell the stories of Vishnu’s avatar-s and teach about dharma.
