Vedanta Pravesha - Study of the basic principles of Vedanta

The principal texts of Advaita Vedanta are the Upanishad-s, the Brahma-sutra-s and the Bhagavadgita. These three together are known as the Prasthana-traya. These texts, along with the Bhashya-s of Adi Shankaracharya contain profound and subtle philosophical doctrines. There is an established and systematic order for the study of Advaita Vedanta. To gain an entry into the Prasthana-traya, one needs to first study the Prakarana Grantha-s, introductory texts containing the fundamentals of Vedanta. This course has been designed to provide an understanding of the basic principles of Vedanta and the meanings of important technical (Paaribhashika) terms as presented in various Prakarana Grantha-s. This is meant to be undertaken even before beginning the study of the Prakarana Grantha-s themselves. The course instructor, Dr. Sathyanarayana C.T., will equip learners to build strong foundations, enabling them to undertake detailed study of the Prasthana-traya.

About the Teacher

Know More about the Course

Vedanta is one of the most important and profound shastra-s in the Indian philosophical tradition. Although Vedantic literature includes highly authoritative works such as the Bhashya Grantha-s of Adi Shankaracharya and advanced, scholarly treatises like the Bhamati, Advaita-siddhi, and similar texts, these works are not taken up directly for study at the initial stage.
Vedanta is regarded as the upeya-shastra, the ultimate purport of all other shastra-s. According to the traditional method of study, shastric learning proceeds step by step, where each stage of study equips the student with the knowledge necessary for the next, more advanced level.
Therefore, this course serves as a foundational, first-level program, intended to prepare students for a structured and progressive study of Vedantic texts. It provides the essential conceptual groundwork required for the systematic study of Prakarana Grantha-s and, eventually, the deeper engagement with the classical texts of Vedanta.
