Shishupalavadha - Sarga 13 (Tamil Explanation)
Shishupalavadham is one of the five Mahakavyas of Sanskrit Literature. It was composed by the great poet Magha. 13th sarga of this poem describes the meeting of Yudhishthira and Srikrishna as the latter arrives in Indraprastha for the Rajasuya yaga. Shishupalavadham is one of the five Mahakavyas of Sanskrit Literature. It was composed by the great poet Magha, who is famed for possessing, in equal measure, the faculties for upama (simile), arthagaurava (depth of meaning) and padalalitya (graceful words) – This is conveyed by the saying “माघे सन्ति त्रयो गुणाः”। Shishupalavadham has 20 cantos. It is said that, having studied the first nine cantos of this kavya, one will not find any new words in the entire Sanskrit. “नवसर्गगते माघे नवशब्दो न विद्यते''।
The 13th sarga of this poem has been prescribed for the Kovida examination (5th level) of the Chittoor series. This sarga, with 59 shlokas, describes the meeting of Yudhishthira and Shrikrishna as the latter arrives in Indraprastha for the Rajasuya Yaga. The affection between Krishna and the pandavas, and the excitement of citizens as the procession passes through the streets of Indraprastha are brought out by the poet with beautiful expressions. His flair for using rare kriyapadas is also demonstrated well in the sarga.
