शिशुपालवधम् - सर्गः १ (तमिळ्-भाषया)

Shishupalavadham is one of the five Mahakavyas of Sanskrit Literature. It was composed by the great poet Magha. The first sarga of this poem opens with the arrival of sage Naarada in Dvaraka, to remind Krishna to fulfil one of the main purposes of his avatara by killing Shishupala. Krishna also gets an invite from Yudhishthira at the same time, requesting him to participate in the Rajasuya yaga. In these pre-recorded videos, Smt. Shishupalavadham is one of the five Mahakavyas of Sanskrit Literature. It was composed by the great poet Magha, who is famed for possessing, in equal measure, the faculties for upama (simile), arthagaurava (depth of meaning) and padalalitya (graceful words) – This is conveyed by the saying “माघे सन्ति त्रयो गुणाः”। Shishupalavadham has 20 cantos. It is said that, having studied the first nine cantos of this kavya, one will not find any new words in entire Sanskrit. “नवसर्गगते माघे नवशब्दो न विद्यते”।

What is the Syllabus?

First sarga of Shishupalavadham has been prescribed for the first year Shastri examination of National Sanskrit University, Tirupati. This sarga, with 75 shlokas, describes the meeting of Narada and Krishna at Dvaraka, where Narada reminds Krishna of the atrocities wrought by Shishupala and conveys the request of Indra to destroy him. At the same time, a messenger arrives from Indraprastha with Yudhishthira’s message requesting Krishna’s presence at the proposed Rajasuya Yajna.
