Ratnavali is a drama in 4 acts, composed by the royal poet Harsha. It belongs to the genre of Natika, which is one of the 18 upa-rupakas. The main rasa is shrngara, with the famous king Udayana/Vatsaraja as the hero, and the princess Ratnavali as the heroine. Ratnavali is heavily inspired by the plot and style of Malavikagnimitra of Kalidasa.
This play is a comedy about court life. It centres around the episodes of light-hearted love-intrigue of King Udayana with a young woman Ratnavali, of unknown lineage. They both secretly meet through the help of a jester and the damsel’s friend which leads to the jealousy of the head-queen. Her anger and resentment are very vivid at the end, when the maiden is discovered to be her lost cousin.
