Prepare Modakams for Ganesha

Lord Ganesha is known to be very fond of Modakams, which is why we have chosen to begin this year’s Ganesha celebration by learning to prepare tasty and authentic Modakams. In this course Smt. Vishaka Sridhar & Smt. Bhagirathi Sriram will teach us the method of preparing different types of Modakams.

About the Course

Learning Outcomes :

  • Learn to make the poornam/hoorana. (sweet and spicy- stuffing)
  • Learn to make the dough - outer covering.
  • Know how to mould /shape the dough.
  • Learn to bake tasty Modakams, offer to Ganesha and enjoy the same.

Precautions: 

This session involves cooking with fire. Hence it is extremely important for children to be  accompanied by elders for support.

 Materials required :

Kindly go through the list of ingredients and have the pre-requirements ready.

Ingredients:

Dough:
  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Water
Sweet poornam / hoorana :
  • Grated Coconut- 1 cup
  • Ghee
  • Cardomam powder
  • Grated Jaggery – ½ a cup

Savoury poornam / hoorana :
  • Urad dal - 1 cup
  • Toor dal -1tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Chillies - Red / green – 2 to 3 as per taste
  • Asofoetida/Hing
  • Salt
  • Mustard seeds
  • Cooking oil
Cooking utensils and other requirements :
  • A heavy thick bottomed vessel
  • Kadai/Pan –( 2 )
  •  Caserole (Hot Box)
  •  A clean thin (mul /dhoti/ veshti) cloth
  •  Ladles
  •  Cooking gas stove
  •  Cleaning cloth

Pre-preperations :

Kindly prepare the following beforehand :

  • Clean and soak one cup of rice with one glass of water for 1.5 hours.
  • Keep the coconut readily grated for use.
  • Keep the jaggery readily grated for use.
  • Clean and soak together Urad dal, toor dal and a few chillies as per taste for 45 minutes.
