Pratimanataka is one among the 13 plays of Bhasa-mahakavi (Bhasa-nataka-chakra). It is spread over 7 Acts covering an imaginary story based on Ramayana. Bharata is portrayed to be the main character who drives this whole play. In this course, Dr. Shobha Vasuki covers the meaning of all the lines and verses in the nataka in an engaging and attractive manner.

About the Text

Bhasa-mahakavi is the foremost among the most celebrated and earliest Sanskrit poets. He is known for the set of Nataka-s composed by him based on varied stories popularly known as Bhasa-nataka-chakram. Pratimanataka is also among these sets of plays written by Bhasa.

Pratima means Statue and Nataka means drama/play. This play has been named thus as the theme of the play comes to light in the 3rd act when Bharata enters into the hall of statues situated outside Ayodhya. This is an imaginary story written by Bhasa based on the events in Ramayana. The dominant rasa in this play is the "Karuna-rasa".
