Nitishatakam is one of the most famous didactic kavyas of Sanskrit, composed by Bhartrhari. Many of its verses are hugely popular. This course comprises of audio lectures in Tamil by Smt. Visalakshi Sankaran, following the verses and order of the Nirnay Sagar publication of 1914.

Nitishatakam is one of the most famous didactic kavyas of Sanskrit. Many of its verses are hugely popular, quoted often even by those who have studied Sanskrit only minimally. Though not much is known about the personal history of its author, Bhartrihari, he has attained immortality through his triad of centuries – the Niti, Shringara and Vairagya shatakas, respectively dealing with the themes of Conduct, Romance and Renunciation.
The Nitishatakam is divided into ten sections, named by the author as ‘paddhati’s. They are the murkha-paddhati, vidvat-paddhati, manashaurya-paddhati, artha-paddhati, durjana-paddhati, sujana-paddhati, paropakara-paddhati, dhairya-paddhati, daiva-paddhati and karma-paddhati. Each paddhati has ten verses. Thus, the total number of verses in the Nitishatakam comes to 100.
However, there are many variant readings for this text, the result of which there are nearly 130 verses which are ascribed to the Nitishatakam in various editions. The current course follows the verses and order of the Nirnay Sagar publication of 1914.
