About Vishnusahasranama
Vishnusahasranama, is a Sanskrit hymn which contains a list of 1,000 names of Bhagavan Narayana. It is one of the most sacred and popular stotras in Hinduism. The Vishnu Sahasranāma is a part of Anushasana Parva of the epic Mahabharata of Veda Vyasa. The Vishnusahasranama is said to be taught by Bhishma to Yudhisthira in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
Several Bhashyas (detailed commentaries) have been penned by various acharyas to explain the greatness of the 1000 names of Bhagavan. One of the most venerated of these is the commentary by Adi Shankaracharya.
The text Vishnusahasranama with Adi Shankaracharya’s commentary will be taken as the main reference.
The course will cover
107 verses forming the main body of Sahasranama.
For each naama, nishpatti (derivation) as given in the Shaankara Bhaashya.
If there are multiple derivations shown by the Acharya, all of them will be given.
Simple explanation of the derivation in English.
Important sources quoted by the Acharya to support his interpretation/derivation.
What the course will not cover
The introductory verses and Phalashruti verses will not be covered.
Line-by-line explanation of the Shaankara Bhaashya will not be done.
Detailed Grammatical analysis will not be done for the derivations given by Acharya.
In-depth discussions given in the Bhaashya will not be taken.
Chanting of the stotra will not be taught.
