Madhyama Vyayoga is a One-Act play of the Vyayoga type written by Bhasa, one of the earliest and most popular poets of Sanskrit. This play is based on an event from Mahabharata. The title of the play is drawn from a word-play on the word “Madhyama”, which could refer to the second of the three sons of a Brahmin, Keshavadasa; and also to Bhima, second among the three sons of Kunti. Towards the end, the reunion of Bhima and Ghatotkacha as father and son take place and Hidimba, the wife of Bhima is ultimately happy. The play is known for it’s fast-paced action and easy-flowing humour.
This whole vyayoga is the syllabus. This course deals with the text in detail, explaining the dialogues, and the verses with anvaya and word-by-word meaning. Dramatic and poetic elements are also discussed as appropriate. The course is targeted at those who wish to prepare for exams, and also to a general audience who wish to study original Sanskrit texts through Sanskrit. All explanation will be in simple Sanskrit.
