Learn to Chant Muka-Panchashati - Part 1 : Aryashatakam

Muka-Panchashati was composed by Sri Muka Shankarendra Saraswati, the 20th Acharya to adorn Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Tamilnadu. By the grace of the Goddess Kamakshi, the Acharya, who was born without the ability to hear or speak, was miraculously endowed with the ability to speak. Humbled by this miracle, he wrote 500 beautiful verses in admiration of the Goddess, which became famous as the Muka-Panchashati. Smt. Srividya Ramakrishnan will teach the first 100 exquisite verses of the "Aryashatakam" in this course.

Muka-Panchashati is a popular stotra in Sanskrit that is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi at the ancient city of Kanchipuram (southern Bharat). It consists of 500 verses glorifying her divine beauty. It was composed by the great poet – Muka Shankarendra Saraswati (also known as Muka Kavi). Legend has it that the author of Muka-Panchashati was named so because he was born as a muka – unable to hear or speak. But by the grace of Goddess Kamakshi he began to speak and became a great poet.

The verses 1-100 (Arya-shatakam) describe the pre-eminentness of Goddess Kamakshi.
The Verses 101-200 (Stuti-shatakam) elaborate and praise the glories of Goddess Kamakshi.
The Verses 201-300 (Padaravinda-shatakam) describe the sacred feet of the Goddess.
The Verses 301-400 (Kataksha-shatakam) describe the compassionate look of the Goddess.
The Verses 401-500 (Mandasmita-shatakam) characterise the divine smile of Goddess Kamakshi.
