Kuvalayananda is a Sahitya shastra treatise written by the great scholar Appayya Dikshita. Appayya Dikshita was the son of Rangarajadhvari and his birth name was Vinayaka Subramanian. He studied all the Vaidic scriptures under Rama Kavi and completed fourteen Vidyaas while he was quite young. He was patronized by kings of Vellore, Tanjore, Vijayanagara, and Venkatagiri. He has written many books on Vedanta, Shivaadvaita, Mimamsa, Vyakarana, Devotional poetry and Alankara, only 60 of them are available now. Kuvalayananda is one of the primary texts of Sahityashastra. It covers 100 alankaras in detail, with definitions (lakshana) and examples for each, in addition to an elaborate explanation of the sub-types of each alankara. The has both verses and prose explanations. Kuvalayananda is based on the 5th chapter of Chandraloka of Jayadeva.
