Kavya Prakasha is a Lakshana grantha which explains the rules of poetry written by Mammata. It is a very popular text of Sahitya shastra which has more than 50 commentaries. Kavya prakasha is devided into Ten Chapters called as Ullasas and it beautifully explains the studies on Kavyashastra from Bharata to Bhoja. This text comprises Kaarikaas and Vrittis. Kaarikaa is a short verse in the form of shloka. Vritti is the description which also includes the Udhaaharanaani or examples.
Mammata lived in Kashmir during the latter half of 11th century and first half of 12th century. He was a Kashmiri Shaivite and commonly called as Raajaanaka and his admirers called him Vaagdevataavataara. He was son of Kaiyata and he has written two works - Kaavyaprakasha and Shabda-vyaapara-vichaara. Kavya prakasha is based on Dhvani Siddhanta.
This course is the second part in the series on Kavyaprakasha. It covers 7th Ullasa of the text, titled दोषदर्शनम् । It enumerates the 16 kinds of poetic defects in detail with examples.
