Sri Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmya, is one of the most influential and widely recited devotional texts dedicated to the Divine Mother. It forms a significant portion of the Markandeya Purana and consists of 700 verses arranged in thirteen chapters. The text is traditionally divided into three sections – Prathama, Madhyama, and Uttama Charita – which describe different manifestations of the Goddess and her role in restoring balance in the cosmos.
The narrative presents the Divine Mother appearing in various forms to protect the universe and to defeat powerful asura-s such as Madhu–Kaitabha, Mahishasura, and Shumbha-Nishumbha. Alongside these narratives, the text preserves several profound hymns of praise offered by gods and sages, expressing devotion, gratitude, and surrender to the Divine Mother. These hymns highlight the idea that the Goddess pervades all aspects of creation and serves as the sustaining and protective force behind the universe.
