The Champuramayana of Bhoja is one of the most popular kavyas of the Champu type, follows the story of Valmiki’s Ramayaṇa closely, but compresses it a great deal. It is known for the beauty of expressions and his style is sweet and distinctive. Champu is a category of poetry where both verse and prose are employed. Bhoja was a great king, a sincere patron of Samskrta. He only wrote 5 kaṇdas (up to the Sundarakanda)
The Balakanda of the poem covers the entire Balakanda as in Valmiki Ramayana, starting from the Valmiki’s curse to the krauncha bird to Rama meeting Parashurama, covering all major events like Rama’s birth, education, journey along with Vishvamitra, killing of Tataka, protecting the yajna from asuras, stories of ganga, Ahalya, Trishanku and Rama’s marriage.
