“अष्टाध्यायी जगन्माता अमरकोशो जगत्पिता” (Ashtadhyayi is the mother of the world, and Amarakosha is the father) is a popular saying. Ashtadhyayi and Amarakosha are extremely useful tools for those who wish to gain a mastery of the Sanskrit language and the shastras. In olden times, it was a common practice to teach children to memorize these two texts at a very young age, even before formal learning began. Equipped with these fixed in memory, as they studied the language and shastras, the children learned to apply the sutras easily and had a phenomenal vocabulary.
Ashtadhyayi is written by Panini. Ashtadhyayi text of approximately 4000 sutras is divided into eight Adhyayas (chapters), and hence the name is Ashtadhyayi. अष्टानाम् अध्यायानां समाहार: इति अष्टाध्यायी.
