Upanishads say that for a person to achieve the real purpose of life, to achieve Atmanubhuti, he has to be a real atma-sadhaka and follow certain steps to achieve it. In Sadhana Panchakam, Sri Adi Shankaracharya precisely gives the stepping stones taken from Upanishads to be followed by an atma-sadhaka which counts to 40 instructions explained in 5 shlokas with 8 instructions in each shloka. For an atma-sadhaka, let him be in any stage of his life, the stotram has the answers to his questions regarding the Sadhana to be performed. Shri. Sadhana Panchakam is a small but beautiful Vedanta Prakarana Grantha by Sri Adishankaracharya which contains about 5 shlokas with 8 Upadeshas in each shloka concatenating to a total of 40 Upadeshas for an atma-sadhaka. It is a set of guided instructions given by the Guru to his sishyas. The sishya’s ultimate goal is to get the purpose of his life solved and being one with Para-Brahma and the Guru is the knower of truth. Starting from the first upadesha which asks us to study Veda/our scriptures daily and to follow the instructions given in it to the 40th upadesha asking us to contemplate in Para-Brahma. For the question, "Why a sadhaka is asked to follow certain instructions before directly contemplating on the Para-Brahma" have an answer that only after following the instructions as given in the Vedas in the way as instructed by the Guru and without expecting any fruit from it, the sadhaka will attain purification of mind and will be eligible for contemplation on Para-Brahmam.

Author: Sri Adishankaracharya is one of the most prominent Acharyas of Sanatana Dharma. He took birth in Kalady and travelled across the whole Bharata 3 times expounding the Advaita philosophy across the country winning over various other scholars in vadas in a short span of 32 years. The Acharya has written extensively, starting from simple devata stotrams to the Prasthana-traya Bhashyas (commentaries on Prasthana-traya – Srimad Bhagavadgita, Brahma Sutras and 10 Principal Upanishads). He has also authored several short Prakarana granthas highlighting the concepts of Advaita Vedanta. 

All the five shlokas of Sadhana Panchakam will be covered with a guidance to chant it perfectly and full meaning of each shloka will explained in detail.
