Learn to do traditional festive decor

Traditional decorations add a lot to the festive fervor, by setting the right ambience .They help our sense organs to be in focus during prayer and worship. In this course, Smt. Ananthalakshmi Sesh will guide us to prepare handmade decorative items for Ganesha Chaturthi.

About the Course

Learning outcomes:

You will learn to do the following:

  • Garlands & Torans
  • Umbrellas for Ganesha
  • Diya decoration and Diya stand

Materials required :

Day 1 - Garland and Toranam

  • Durva grass/Bermuda grass/Garike /Arugampul (a big bunch)
  • Chick Peas/Kabuli Channa (white) & Brown Channa, Green gram /moong, Corn, Groundnut, Green Peas (should be soaked overnight and kept ready)
  • Mango leaves
  • Flowers like Marigold, Chrysanthemum (Samandhi) or Rose.
  • Stapler
  • Needle
  • Thick white thread

Pre-preparations:

Kindly do this the day before hand:

Soak the lentils in water overnight so that they are soft while using the needle for making mala

Precautions:

This session involves handling a needle while doing the garland. Hence, adult supervision is strongly recommended for the children who attend this.

Day 2 – Umbrella Making

  • Dry coconut shell -1
  • Sand paper
  • Cardboard
  • Colourful sheets/ colourful chart paper
  • Acrylic Paints 
  • Paint brushes
  • M-seal or clay whichever is available
  • Pencil
  • Decorative materials like kundans, decorative lace, pearls
  • Strong glue

Day 3 – Diya decoration and Diya stand

  • Earthen clay Diya
  • Old CDs - 1 or 2
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Water
  • Decorative Lace
  • Decorative items – kundans/pearls/hangings
  • Glue
  • M-seal or clay whichever is available
  • Small thick sheets
  • While board marker
